AL-BIRUNI OBSERVATORY - a centre for falak education and research
PUTATAN: The Al-Biruni Observatory in Tanjung Dumpil here not only serves as the official site for sighting of the moon, but also plays an important role in falak (Islamic astronomy) education and research in Sabah, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor.
He said the observatory has great potential to be further developed into a more comprehensive centre for falak education and Islamic astronomy.
“The observatory can also be developed into a competitive, high-technology research centre, as well as an educational tourism destination (astro-tourism) which can contribute to the state’s economic growth.
“To realise this, the centre must be equipped with facilities and to meet required standards. This includes improving observation facilities, interactive exhibition spaces, learning halls, visitor facilities, as well as more tourist-friendly access.
“The state government is ready to assist so that this observatory can emerge as one of Sabah’s icons of educational tourism,” he said at the launching ceremony of the statelevel official Moon Sighting (Ramadan, Syawal and Zulhijjah) for the year 1447H/2026M, here on Tuesday.
His speech was delivered by State Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif.
The Chief Minister is confident that with strategic planning and cooperation from various parties, the observatory will not only be a source of pride for Muslims, but also for the people of Sabah.
“I hope the young generation present today will be able to see that the fields of falak and astronomy offer vast opportunities to be explored, and can become a career that contributes to the development of the ummah and the nation,” he said.
He said events closely related to Muslim worship such as this not only carry high spiritual value, but also reflect the government’s seriousness in ensuring that Islamic religious affairs are managed with full responsibility, professionalism and integrity.
